Frequently asked questions

What are traction batteries used for?

Traction batteries are designed to supply electric motors with power over extended periods and withstand repeated charge–discharge cycles. They are used in warehouse equipment, floor scrubbers and other cleaning machines, lifting platforms, electric vehicles, golf carts, wheelchairs and other electrically powered equipment.

How does a traction battery differ from a starter battery?

A starter battery is primarily designed to deliver a high current briefly when starting an engine. A traction battery, by contrast, must supply energy over a longer period and regularly withstand relatively deep discharges.

How do I choose a traction battery for my equipment?

Consider the voltage, capacity, battery compartment dimensions, terminal position and type, and the minimum required battery weight for warehouse lifting and handling equipment. You must also take account of the equipment's duty cycle, the required operating time between charges and the equipment manufacturer's requirements.

Which types of traction batteries does Ventura offer?

Traction applications use several battery technologies, including flooded lead-acid (FLA), AGM and gel. The FFT series consists of flooded batteries, GT comprises maintenance-free traction batteries with a high cycle life, and VTG XT uses TRUE GEL technology.

What is the cycle life of a traction battery?

Traction battery life is measured in charge–discharge cycles. The Ventura catalogue specifies 1,000–1,500 cycles for a number of models. The actual number depends on depth of discharge, temperature, charging conditions and intensity of use.

How should a traction battery be charged?

Use a charger compatible with the voltage, capacity and technology of the specific battery. Repeated undercharging, overcharging and incorrect charger settings can significantly shorten battery life.

Do traction batteries require maintenance?

This depends on the technology. Sealed AGM and gel models do not require water topping up, whereas flooded batteries require regular checks of electrolyte level and condition. For all types, the case must be kept clean and the terminals, temperature and charging performance monitored.
